Moutan Bark
Moutan Bark is the root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews (Paeonia moutan Sims) (Paeoniaceae).
Moutan Bark contains peonol as an ingredient and is said to have antibacterial and anti-blood stasis effects. Moutan peony is similar to peony, but peony and moutan peony are herbaceous and woody plants, respectively. There is a woody core in the root of the moutan peony, and the one without the core is the crude drug moutan bark. "Women sit like a moutan peony" is a proverb used to describe the beauty of women, but the crude drug moutan bark is used to treat symptoms that make women unable to move due to blood stasis or menstrual pain, etc.
