This aquatic perennial is found in Asia, Europe, and Australia. Its plant height is more than 100 cm and the flowering period in Japan is July. This species is cultivated In Japan to harvest the sacred lotus rhizome. The seed is covered by a hard shell and remains viable for more than 1,000 years.

Fruits are formed in a beehive-shaped torus.
"Nelumbo Seed" is the seed without the exocarp and with the endocarp.
The rhizome grown underground is edible.
